The LORD God Almighty, our Creator, has an honest, unambiguous and unflattering opinion about man, and his heart. We do not need much evidence to confirm this view. If we look around ourselves, and the way man is hurtling himself towards destruction, and annihilation, is good enough evidence of our hearts and the darkness that resides in it.
George Whitefield, one of the great servants of God from Britain, writes in a letter in November 1742, about two essential things that we as Christians should be constantly mindful of, and be pondering over them.
– “Two things I would earnestly recommend to your constant study: the book of God, and your own heart. These two, well understood, will make you an able minister of the New Testament.”
The LORD makes its absolutely clear on these two points. Let us read some verses to see the mind and wisdom of God on these matters.
– “105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105
– “23 For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,” – Proverbs 6:23
– “9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. 10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! 11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.” – Psalm 119:9-11
– “7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:7-8
About the human hearts this is what the Bible says.
– “9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.” – Jeremiah 17:9-10
– “3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.” – Ecclesiastes 9:3
– “5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” – Genesis 6:5
May the words of the LORD, and His enlightening and empowering instructions, help us to live a life, we were created to live. May we always desire to seek the LORD, and search for His words, and His wisdom, in the Bible. May we learn to search our hearts, so that our God would be lifted up, and be glorified, in and through our lives. May these TWO THINGS TO CONSTANTLY STUDY be our work and our focus, all our lives. Even so the LORD help us.
"God sees hearts as we see faces."
