When atrocities are committed against Christians, it is not only painful to see and endure it, but there is a strong and natural human desire to do something in response. Many times one may want to repay the perpetrators in the same coin. Now, as Christians, who hold the Bible as the guide book for our code of conduct, ought to see, what the LORD has to say to us, in such a situation.
David was in a terribly bad situation at one point of time. The wicked seem to be all powerful, and those who followed the LORD appeared, weak and helpless. Let us see what David has to advise us. He says – “1 Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb…7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.” – Psalm 37:1,2,7
Further on in the Psalm, David writes, “8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. 9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. 10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.” – Psalms 37:8-10
The LORD Jesus lays down these principles for the kingdom of God – “27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.” – Luke 6:27-29
What the Word of God is asking from us, as the disciples of the LORD Jesus Christ, is not as easy to practice, as it is to say it. This is where our faith in the LORD, and His justice, is put to test. Though it is not easy, from a natural human point of view, let us seek the LORD to give us grace to trust the LORD, and obey Him, in the face of evil. Even so the LORD help us.
"Jesus’ vocation as “Messiah” was loaded with militaristic expectations. The Jews expected a military conqueror who would destroy his enemies. Jesus’ posture and teaching was diametrically opposite to these militaristic expectations. In other words, Jesus constructed an intentional paradigm shift designed to create new ethical categories for how Yahweh followers are to confront evil."
