The words that we speak are one of the true indicators of who we are. The one who honours his word is the one who can be trusted. The one who always speaks the truth, even if it hurts us, is our true friend. Honestly speaking, this is tall order for human beings. Even though there is variation in shade and grade, still all human beings fall short of such standards. This is true, and this is the reality.
Let us continue to meditate on Psalm 18:30, and see what we can learn today.
– “30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.” – Psalm 18:30
Let us look at the following words, as our last meditation in this series – “…the word of the LORD is tried…” What a powerful way to state the standard that God upholds for His word!!! David doesn’t say, “God speaks the truth always.” He doesn’t even say, “God’s Word can be trusted.” Both the statements are true; but David uses an expression that is very different. David says, the Word that God speaks is tested!
The Hebrew word that David uses is “flawless” – צְרוּפָ֑ה [ṣə·rū·p̄āh] – To smelt, refine, test. God’s Word is tested with most rigorous of tests, and proven to be of exceptionally high quality. It means, God’s Word has no error; no dross; no impurities; no wastage; no flaws; nothing that is irrelevant and incongruous, with Himself and His character.
– “The word of the LORD is proven: “Literally tried in the fire. It has stood all tests; and has never failed those who pleaded it before its author.” – Adam Clarke
– “The flawless nature of God’s word is affirmed in Psalm 12:6, which compares the words of the LORD to silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times. This purity signifies that God’s promises and commands are trustworthy and true, serving as a foundation for faith and practice. The New Testament echoes this sentiment, with Jesus affirming that “Scripture cannot be broken” (John 10:35).” – Berean Study Bible Notes
Elsewhere, the Bible speaks so wonderfully about the Word of God, which is worth reading for our benefit, encouragement and empowerment.
– “6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.’ – Psalm 12:6
– “8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” – Psalm 19:8-10
– “140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.” – Psalm 119:140
The observation that David made is no ordinary claim. He has personally experienced the power and the integrity of God’s Word, and therefore, he says this. Even a cursory glance at David’s life tells us the veracity of his statement. David Guzik commenting on Psalm 18:30 says – “David could say “the word of the LORD is proven” from his personal experience.”
How about us this morning? Can we say like David, ‘the word of the LORD is proven” from our personal experience? Have we experienced the power of God’s Word, and its integrity and honesty? As we trust and walk with the LORD, we will experience for ourselves, the worth and the value of God’s Word. When we experience it, we too can say with boldness and confidence, ‘the word of the LORD is proven!” HalleluYah!!!
"'the word of the Lord is tried;' as silver in a furnace, and is clear of all dross, of error, and falsehood; is free from human mixtures, and without any impurity and unholiness; nor is God's word of promise chargeable with unfaithfulness; all his promises being yea and amen in Christ, and have been tried and proved by the saints in all ages; and have been found true, faithful, constant, and invariable;"
