The distance between point A and point B is the same, as between point B and point A. Very sound logic. We use such logic in our life.
However, that logic is limited, and also faulty, when applied to othersituations. For example – the number of days between 1 January and 31 January are 31 days. But the same is not the case when we reverse it. The number of days between 31 January to 1 January is almost one full year!
The same we can see in regards to God, His blessings and every other good from Him. Psalm 37:3-4 – “3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
When we trust and delight in the LORD, the LORD will bless us. But if we begin with the blessing as our starting point, and then trust and delight in the LORD – it doesn’t work. The motive is misplaced, and in certain instances sinful.
From where we begin, is what matters the most. The point of our beginning gives us a reference point to our heart, its desire and motives. When we trust and delight in God – our focus should be the LORD God alone, and not the blessings. The blessings are out of God’s grace and mercy. It should have no bearing on us, our love and our allegiance to Him. We should view them as an inconsequential bye-product.
If we begin with the blessing in mind, we are merely using God to arrive at the blessing. He is no more the object of our worship, but merely a means to our ends and desires. The end itself may not be wrong. But, where we start from counts…that alone counts.
"We are trying not so much to make God listen to us as to make ourselves listen to Him; we are trying not to persuade God to do what we want, but to find out what he wants us to do. It so often happens that in prayer we are really saying, “Thy will be changed,” when we ought to be saying, “Thy will be done.” The first object of prayer is not so much to speak to God as to listen to Him."
