Paul was not only an evangelist, but a man who had the wisdom to identify people with potential, and encourage and equip them to become the future leaders. He was constantly scouting for good, able, faithful and accountable young leaders with integrity. Once he found them, he trained them to be the next generation leaders of the Church.
We see this in Paul’s exhortation to the young Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:6-12 – “6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
Having giving his insights into life, riches, and what one should earnestly desire, Paul brings in the “Eternal Perspective” to everyday living in verses 11-12. This, as Paul sees, is the foundation for a vibrant and fragrant spiritual life. Please read on…“11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
What Paul wisely advised the young man, is applicable to us also. Do we have an Eternal Perspective to our life, and all that we desire, do, and intend to do? This is essential for a truly fruitful and blessed life.
"Godly character is not the result of good intentions, wishful thinking, some mystical "zap," or even sheer Bible knowledge. It's developed through the self-disciplined application of God's Word at a very basic level, enabled and empowered by God's Spirit."
