The history is not only a record of all that has happened, but also, it is an invaluable treasure trove of wisdom, so that we don’t repeat the same mistakes again. This happens only when we know the history, and learn the lessons from it.
The wise men of old said, “History repeats itself,” and have also added, “He who doesn’t know their history is condemned to repeat it.” Is that not incentive enough to know our history, and know it well? There sure is a point.
The Bible affirms the same, and we better take note of it…
“11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.” – 1 Corinthians 10:11
The Bible records history of the people of Israel, apart from the law, instructions, guidelines, inspiration, encouragement, help and wisdom. All this collective wisdom is for us to learn from their mistakes, and live wisely.
Talking about proverbs, there is another one, which is good for us to know, “A wiseman learns from others mistakes. A fool learns from his own.” Let me add, sadly, I have been a fool many times, like most of us. There is no shame in admitting our mistakes and failures. May the LORD help us live wisely for Him, by taking heed to all that is written down for us.
"The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can’t really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture."
