The LORD Jesus, speaking to the disciples, spoke some very profound words about our ‘tongue’ – “34…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” – Matthew 12:34. It speaks volumes…Words that come out of our mouths are a reflection of our hearts. Theodore Epp, commenting on the words of Jesus urges us to…“Remember that the tongue speaks only what is in the heart.”
The Word of God further exhorts us… “6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” …and… “29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Because, “4 The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.” – Colossians 4:6, Ephesians 4:29, Proverbs 15:4
So, let us remember always that, “20 From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied. 21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” – Proverbs 18:20-21
Therefore, let us pray…“3 Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” – Psalm 141:3
"God has given us two ears, but one tongue, to show that we should be swift to hear, but slow to speak. God has set a double fence before the tongue, the teeth and the lips, to teach us to be wary that we offend not with our tongue.""
