Every person has dreams for their lives. Most of the dreams and purposes are to lead a good and comfortable life. For almost all the dreams that one would have, money is the common denominator. Therefore, we all need to work hard to earn money, so that we can fulfill our dreams.
Somewhere down the line, don’t know how, but, life seems to take a wicked turn. Instead of working so that we can have a good life, we end up being alive to work, work and work…so that we fulfill our dreams – we are no more working to earn a living. We are living so that we may earn, and fulfill our dreams. This is not a new phenomenon. Rather, it is an age-old problem. The LORD made it clear long back – “24 No man can serve two masters…Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” – Matthew 6:24
The LORD Jesus, speaking with His disciples, expounds the same, saying – “26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” – Matthew 16:26
To further confirm this thought, the LORD, through the Parable of the Rich Fool, says – “20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” – Luke 12:20-21
Major Ian Thomas sums it up well – “A man could have all the money in all the banks in all the world, and be worth nothing so far as God is concerned, if he were still living “to and for himself”!”
Therefore, let us not be fools to throw away that which is precious and priceless, for that which is perishable and temporary. Money is needed to live, but we don’t live for money and money alone. May the LORD help us to choose wisely.
"The fellow that has no money is poor. The fellow that has nothing but money is poorer still."
