Church and money have a close relationship. It is a fact, that we need money to organise and run the programmes of the church. It also a fact that, the churches have abused their position and the power it exerts on the laity. The problem of money and live of it in the churches is no something new.
The incident recorded in Matthew 21:12-13 speaks about the corruption in the temple, and the view our LORD took, about all that was accepted and approved by the chief priest and the religious heads – “12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” – Matthew 21:12-13
The established religious heads of Jesus’ day, and their faithfuls, utterly disliked what Jesus had said, and done, that day – “15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,” – Matthew 21:15
Do we not remember the famous “indulgences” of old?…the passionate appeals for money through all and every means for the pomp and human pleasure?…and today, the famous bank account numbers displayed by the preachers on the screens? All this in the name of Jesus, and marketed for the blessings to be received by the giver…the more one gives, the more they will get from God. What a pity. We are utterly bankrupt, just like in the LORD’s day. The LORD seems to say the same, even today – “My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”
May the LORD help us to be His uncompromising and uncontaminated ambassadors.
"The first century money changers were in the temple, but they didn't have the spirit of the temple... They were out of sync with the whole purpose of the Lord's house. "The atmosphere of my Father's house," Jesus seemed to say, "is to be prayer. The aroma around my Father must be that of people opening their hearts in worship and supplication. This is not a place to make a buck. This is a house for calling on the Lord."
