The apostle John, introduces Jesus the Messiah, and rightly so, as the very God Himself. This is very essential for a proper understanding of who Jesus actually is. “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – John 1:1-5
Further on in the gospel, John mentions in 1:14, the incarnation of this Word – “14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14. In simple words, the Word, which was from the beginning, which is God Himself, had come down, to rescue us, by being born as a human being.
Why did God do all that He had done through Jesus? All that the Word had done, despite His pre-eminence, displays clearly and loudly, the great and amazing love, that God has towards us. “16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” “4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)” – John 3:16; Ephesians 2:4
The God who created us, has now come down to rescue and restore the very people who have rebelled against Him, and hence, become His enemies. What kind of a person should God be? What kind of love is this? What kind of heart would hold such amazing love? What kind of heart would even think of such an act of sacrifice? Oh, unimaginable and unfathomable!!!
As we meditate through this Advent season, let us contemplate of our God, His goodness, grace and mercy. Let us remember always, the sufferings and the sacrifice of our LORD. May we seek the LORD, to make us like Him, in all aspects of our lives.
"It was the whole Trinity, which at the beginning of creation said, "Let us make man". It was the whole Trinity again, which at the beginning of the Gospel seemed to say, "Let us save man."
