In the light of all that is happening in the world, especially Israel, I am personally troubled by the Word of God below. I feel very disturbed and troubled, when I read the verses, which in my opinion, reveals the heart of our God. How then should we conduct ourselves, as the chosen people of God?
– “Do not mistreat foreigners who are living in your land. Treat them as you would an Israelite, and love them as you love yourselves. Remember that you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” – Leviticus 19:33-34 (GNT)
– “For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.” – Deuteronomy 10:17-19
– “Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.” – Deuteronomy 10:17-18
– “Long ago I gave these commands to my people: ‘You must see that justice is done, and must show kindness and mercy to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners who live among you, or anyone else in need.” – Zechariah 7:9 (GNT)
– “I am the Lord, and I consider all people the same, whether they are Israelites or foreigners living among you.” – Numbers 15:16 (GNT)
– “See that justice is done – help those who are oppressed, give orphans their rights, and defend widows.” – Isaiah 1:17 (GNT)
Most of the verses above, are given by God, to the Jews, in the wilderness – this simply means – even before they entered their promised land. How should we understand, interpret and apply them, if they are words from God, revealing His heart? Sadly, the church seems to choose silence, if not the abdication of its responsibility.
"God’s heart for the foreigner is stated clearly throughout Scripture. Often, we allow politics or public opinion to form our convictions about immigrants, refugees, international students, and other foreigners living among us. We must let the Word of God, rather than society or personal prejudices, determine our attitudes and actions towards outsiders. Depending on your Bible translation, we read that God repeatedly commanded His people to love, serve, provide for, and share His Word with the “aliens,” “sojourners,” “foreigners,” or “strangers” living among them."
