Life is unpredictable and full of surprises. Sometimes, things change for our good, and many times it may not – this is the uncertainty of life. As a child of God, as His disciple, and as His ambassadors, we are called to trust the One who had called us into His marvellous light – 1 Peter 2:9-10.
The Psalmist, exhorts his readers to trust God, at all times, by drawing our attention to the utter faithfulness of God Almighty, who has taken upon Himself, the responsibility of our safety and security, through this journey called life.
– “3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.” – Psalm 121:3-4
The imagery that is used is so down-to-earth. It is the scene of a watchman, walking streets in the night, keeping a watch over the place, and all its residents. The residents sleep peacefully through the night, because they know, the watchman is awake, and is walking through the streets, to protect the people, from every harm and danger. How comforting it is to know that God is our Watchman!!! HalleluYah!
This Watchman, the One who keeps us safe, through all the dangers of the night, does not fall asleep, neither does He slumber. He is on guard, and He is the LORD God Almighty – He is concerned about us, and He will stand with us. HE WILL NOT ALLOW…as much as our foot to be moved. He who took upon Himself the responsibility of our safety and security, does not doze off to sleep, in utter disregard of His promise. He doesn’t even slumber – a quick slip into sleep – for He is not man to be unfaithful and irresponsible.
– “26 For the LORD will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being caught.” – Proverbs 3:26
– “17 Unless the LORD had been my help, My soul would soon have settled in silence. 18 If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up. 19 In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.” – Psalm 94:17-20
We are called to trust God, and walk by faith, in the LORD’s faithfulness, and His trustworthiness. May we not be fools to worry over life, and all that may await us. Instead, let us trust God, to keep us safe, through it all. Has He not kept us safe thus far? If He had, then will He not keep us safe, in the future too? If the LORD is watching over us, then why worry about anything and anyone? May the LORD help us, to keep Jesus as our sole focus, and not anything that may be troubling us – remember Peter walking on the water? Even so, the LORD help us.
"It is almighty wisdom that contrives, and almighty power that works the safety of those that put themselves under God's protection. He is a wakeful, watchful Keeper; he is never weary; he not only does not sleep, but he does not so much as slumber."
