The biblical concept of safety and security, of a Christian is, diametrically opposite to how the world perceives it. From a world’s point of view, our safety and security is in our own hands. It is solely our responsibility. We have to look after our own welfare. While the LORD God Almighty, the God of the Bible asks us to trust Him for the same. Therefore, all the children of God, have faithfully walked this path of faith, by trusting God our Creator, and Redeemer, for their safety and security. It is the LORD’s responsibility to keep us safe and secure. We are expected to place our trust in God, and continue to walk in faith, the journey we are called to walk. The author of Psalm 121 hits this matter, bang on its head.
– “7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” – Psalm 121:7-8
Let us see what these thirty two words, set in two verses of Psalm 121, have to speak to us, this morning.
1- For sure, there is evil In the world we live in. This evil is actively working towards limiting and eliminating godly children. This is why the Psalmist says…
– “The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil…”
2- People are deeply concerned about their lives. Much more than the present life, people are concerned about their after-life. People wonder, what will happen of their souls, after our physical death, which is a certainty. To reassure the Christian, and soothe any troubling and disturbing questions, the Psalmist declares…
– “…he shall preserve thy soul.”
3- Many times in a day, we have to travel on the roads, as part of our daily routine, and in the discharging of our normal and mundane responsibilities of our life. Our personal safety and security is closely linked with our everyday travel. A thousand and one things can go wrong, just at the drop of a hat. Such is the volatility of human life. Anything can happen to anyone at anytime. Therefore, the Psalmist reassures the reader…
– “The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in…”
4- God’s protection and preservation of His own, is not some onetime event. The LORD God Almighty is concerned about us, and all the matters, related to us, forever. This is God’s commitment towards all His children. Knowing this well, the Psalmist declares with a forceful and joyful shout…
– “…from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Have we noticed “THE TRIPLE PROMISE” of God’s presence, in the above two verses, that will keep us safe and secure? This is, God reassuring the child of God, that YAHWEH, the Almighty God truly cares, and that He is, firmly committed to it.
– “7 The LORD shall preserve thee…he shall preserve… 8 The LORD shall preserve…”
“Three times have we the phrase, ‘Jehovah shall keep,’ as if the sacred Trinity thus sealed the word to make it sure: ought not all our fears to be slain by such a threefold flight of arrows? What anxiety can survive this triple promise?” – Charles H. Spurgeon
Our times and our days are, in the hands of YAHWEH, the God Almighty. The LORD cares for us, and would not let His children be troubled. This does not mean, we will not get wet in the rain, or winds will not hit us, and troubles don’t come close to us. Whatever may happen, and whatever may befall us, the LORD of hosts would never leave our side. He will not abandon us, nor will He ever forsake us. Let this assurance fuel our faith, and enable us to step forward in faith, on this journey, that we are called to walk upon. The rest is in God’s hands. Even so, the LORD help us.
"He will keep thee in life and death; going out to thy labour in the morning of thy days, and coming home to thy rest when the evening of old age calls thee in. It is a protection for life. The Spirit, who is their Preserver and Comforter, shall abide with them for ever."
