The Word of God is a never ending, and ever springing, fountain of life-giving water. The same theme is found in Psalm 62. The twelve verses of Psalm 62 has such influence over a Christian, through its rich theology, and faith building inspiration and encouragement, that, even many books may not fully do such a work in us, so fully, and in, such a short period of time.
Let us read verses five through eight, in the coming few days, to see, what we can learn from these words.
– “5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” – Psalm 62:5-8
The very first sentence – “MY SOUL, WAIT THOU ONLY UPON GOD” is such a powerful reminder to us about what is the chief duty of man. Here in these seven small words, David is speaking to himself and urging himself to WAIT ONLY UPON GOD.
1- WAIT
The word WAIT indicates, an intentionally slowed down pace. It tells us that the time had come for a pause. In all probability, because of the inability or helplessness of the person concerned.
– “to allow time to go by, especially while staying in one place without doing very much, until someone comes, until something that you are expecting happens or until you can do something:” – Cambridge Dictionary
2- THOU
The word “THOU” is to emphasise that, it is David, who needs to do this waiting, and not someone else. This is giving himself the clarity so that there is no confusion or misunderstanding. He is saying to himself, “David, you have to WAIT…”
3- ONLY
This word ONLY indicates that, there are not many options available. Rather, there is only one option. It indicates the definiteness and certainty on part of David.
– “no one or nothing more besides; solely.” – Standard Dictionary
4- UPON GOD
David, speaking to himself, clearly concludes that, “he has to wait upon God alone, and no one else.” He is to wait on one else. He has no other options or choices to choose from. David’s clarity of thought is his greatest strength.
Why does David want to MY SOUL, WAIT THOU ONLY UPON GOD? He know all too well that, any help from, another source is, not only futile, but much more than that, actually, there is none, who can truly help us, as does, the God of the Bible. The words WAIT, THOU and ONLY have their meaning, and their purpose, when read in the context of GOD; hence David says, MY SOUL, WAIT THOU ONLY UPON GOD. HalleluYah!!!
What about us? Can we too join David in saying, “My soul, wait thou only upon God?’ Even so, the LORD help us.
"They trust not God at all who trust him not alone. He that stands with one foot on a rock, and another foot upon a quicksand, will sink and perish, as certainly as he that standeth with both feet upon a quicksand. David knew this, and therefore calleth earnestly upon his soul (for his business lay most within doors) to trust only upon God."
