Life on earth is not something which is forever. All who are born will have to die one day. All who live, will do something or the other. All who die will have to give an account of all what they have done, while they were alive. Life is given by God; along with life, God gives us time, talents and opportunities. Then when we die, we stand before God, to give an account of all want we have done with the time, talents and the opportunities given to us. This is what the Bible, the written Word of God, tells us.
– “27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” – Hebrews 9:27
– “10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” – 2 Corinthians 5:10
– “12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” – 1 Corinthians 3:12-15
Therefore, O Christian, let us be mindful of what goes through our hearts and minds, and mind our words and deeds. This is precisely what Proverbs 23:17-18 urges from us, as the disciples of the LORD Jesus.
– “17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. 18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.” – Proverbs 23:17-18
The encouragement for us, as the children of God is, not to lose our faith and hope, but rather, to continue to steadily plod in life, and steadfastly walk in God’s ways. For all who do so, the LORD in His mercy and grace, at the time appointed, will reward us much more than we may actually deserve. That is why the LORD, as would a Father, urges us about these four things….
– “17 Let not thine heart envy sinners:”
– “but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.”
– “18 For surely there is an end;”
– “and thine expectation shall not be cut off.”
1- Let us not be desirous of the ways of the sinful and evil people, however tempting it may appear to be.
2- Instead, let us “fear” God and obey Him.
3- For our time on earth is, but for a short period. The LORD God Almighty, will judge all things, both those which are done secretly, and the ones done openly.
4- When we walk in faith and obedience to God, He will ensure a reward for us, which is not only fair and just, but many times outweighing, all what we may have actually done.
– “37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.” – Psalm 37:37
– “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,” – 1 Peter 1:3-4
Let us not envy sinners, but rather walk faithfully with the LORD, in hope of our eternal reward. Even soz the LORD help us.
"If this life was all there would be, then we would have much more reason to envy sinners. Yet, as the conclusion of the Book of Ecclesiastes demonstrates, surely there is a hereafter, and therefore wisdom means that we should live in the fear of the LORD."
