The LORD God Almighty, has spoken very clearly, on how we as the children of God, the Chosen ones, the disciples and the ambassadors of the LORD Jesus Christ, should live, behave and conduct ourselves in this world. The Ten Commandments clearly mentions about, the moral and ethical life, a child of God is called to live. If I am a chosen child of God, this is what is expected from me, as an evidence to my life in Christ Jesus. We are given no options to alter, dilute or replace them. We either follow them, or are not following them.
– “3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me…7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain…8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy…12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” – Exodus 20:3,7-8,12-17
The first three commands relate to man’s relationship with God. The following seven commands relate to man’s relationship with his fellow men. This is my reading – our relationship with God is reflected in the way we relate with our fellow human beings. This is precisely what the LORD Jesus meant when He said…
– “35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” – Matthew 22:35-40
The commands given to us by the LORD, are a reflection of who He is, and His immutable and impeccable character. So, in following the commands, we are following the character of God, thereby being transformed into the image of His Son, our LORD Jesus Christ – 2 Corinthians 3:18.
– “It has been well said that the commandments are God’s nature expressed in terms of moral imperatives.” – R. Alan Cole
Does our life reflect the law of the LORD? Do people see in us, the LORD Jesus Christ, and His moral and ethical influence, and its bearing upon our thoughts, words and deeds? Do people see the LORD Jesus in us? What kind of life are we living? What place does Christian morals, ethics and principles have in our lives? What priority do we give to the law of the LORD? Do we obey the LORD, only when it is convenient? Do we compromise with the world, when it is uncomfortable, and silently side with the world?
May we be found as true children of God, whose life reflects the Christian morals, ethics and principles. Let us never ever forget that the “ETHICAL AND MORAL BEARINGS OF A CHRISTIAN DISCIPLE” is a true reflection of our LORD and Saviour, working in our lives; an indication of our progressive transformation of our lives; and a clear and definite indication of the direction of our lives. Even so the LORD help us.
"It is wrong to steal, or murder, or covet, not primarily because these sins are forbidden by the Decalogue. They are forbidden by the Decalogue, because they were previously forbidden by conscience; and they are forbidden by conscience because they are forbidden by the nature of things; and the nature of things is God."
