Travel can be a thing of joy, if one loves travelling. Sometimes, we eagerly look forward for the destination, but certainly not like the journey itself. As a Christian, we are on a journey too. We are called to walk the “Narrow Way” by our LORD.
– “13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” – Matthew 7:13-14
Many of us find the journey very unattractive, and at times, disheartening, even though, we love the destination. However, it is good for us to know that, the journey we are called to take up, is very much an integral part of the destination. It is tough and testing, because of our fallen and rebellious human that doesn’t like instructions, and wants to do whatever it wants, without any restraint and restrictions. What this journey is intended to do is, it chisels, chips and shapes us, into the person that God desires us to be. The chipping and chiselling is in the form of our obedience to the instructions or commands that God gave us in the Bible, even though our flesh may not like it or want it. We are to obey the instructions of the LORD, and walk on that path – the “Narrow Way.”
– “17 He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.” – Proverbs 10:17
The NARROW WAY that we are called to, and our obedience in walking on it, is the “Way of Life” even though it is not simple and easy. The Amplified Bible version, of Proverbs 10:17, gives us a clearer and deeper insight as to what is the LORD wanting from us, as His children, called to travel on this “Narrow Way.”
– “17 He who learns from instruction and correction is on the [right] path of life [and for others his example is a path toward wisdom and blessing], But he who ignores and refuses correction goes off course [and for others his example is a path toward sin and ruin].” – Proverbs 10:17 [Amplified Bible]
The Berean Study Bible, expounds the above verse and explains the significance of our implicit obedience to the instructions of our LORD. This is “Walking the Narrow Way!”
– “In the biblical context, “instruction” often refers to teachings that align with God’s wisdom, as seen in the Torah and the wisdom literature. The “path to life” suggests a journey that leads to spiritual and moral well-being, echoing the teachings of Deuteronomy 30:19-20, where choosing life is equated with loving and obeying God. The concept of a “path” is a common metaphor in Proverbs, symbolizing one’s way of living. In the New Testament, Jesus refers to Himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), indicating that true life is found in following Him.”
What is the definition of walking the “Narrow Way” for us? What do we mean, when we say “I am a Christian?” What are we expecting from this journey that we are called to? What is it that we are focusing on, while travelling on this road, as a Christian? Where does “obedience” to God, and His instructions, fit into all our aims and goals in life? How do the instructions of the LORD, influence on our choices and decisions we make in life? Do we see our obedience to God as an integral part of the journey we are called to walk upon? “ARE WE IN THE WAY OF LIFE?” May we earnestly seek the LORD to grant us His grace and strength, to walk faithfully and obediently on this “Narrow Way.” Even so, the LORD help us.
"Heeding [to] instruction is not just about acquiring knowledge but about walking in a way that leads to life. This life is both abundant and eternal, rooted in a relationship with God. Ignoring correction leads to a path of destruction. It is crucial to remain humble and open to correction to avoid going astray. Humility is essential in accepting instruction and reproof. A humble heart is [both] teachable and open to growth."
