The blessing that we find in Numbers 6:24-26, is what the LORD Himself has decreed, that it should be pronounced as a benediction on His Chosen People. This threefold blessing is underwritten by YAHWEH Himself. It has no conditions attached with it.
– “24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: 25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: 26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” – Numbers 6:24-26
Some interesting points to observe, and lessons to learn, in these three verses.
1- THE UNIQUE NAME
Each of these three blessings begin with a unique name of God – “24 The LORD…25 The LORD…26 The LORD…” – Numbers 6:24-26. The LORD that we read is actually YAHWEH, in the original language. YAHWEH is the covenant name of God.
– “Yahweh (YHWH) is a sacred, covenantal name for God, representing His eternal, unchanging nature and His faithful, relational commitment to His people. Revealed to Moses as “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14), the name Yahweh signifies God’s self-existence, presence, and covenant faithfulness, which is emphasized throughout the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus Christ.” – AI Overview
2- THE COVENANTAL NAME – THRICE USED
God intentionally used His Covenant Name thrice, to make the emphasis and the impression that, He is binding Himself to the promise, that He Himself has asked the priests to use, while blessing His Chosen People. This is to remind us, as His People, that the LORD is committed for our care, and for our good.
– “The invocation of “the LORD” refers to Yahweh, the covenantal name of God, emphasizing His personal relationship with Israel. The concept of blessing in the Old Testament often includes prosperity, health, and success, but it primarily signifies God’s favor and presence. This blessing is a reminder of God’s promise to Abraham to bless his descendants (Genesis 12:2-3). It also foreshadows the ultimate blessing through Jesus Christ, who brings spiritual blessings to all nations (Ephesians 1:3).” – Berean Study Bible Notes
3- THE WHOLESOME AND ALL ENCOMPASSING NAME
We can further note that, the name YAHWEH, means a whole lot more than, what one can ever think about. It is an all-encompassing name of God, committed wholly and unconditionally through a covenant for the welfare of His Chosen Children. The covenantal name of God emphasises His eternal presence, and His everlasting faithfulness, to His Chosen People. The LORD’s blessing, as we see in Numbers 6:24-26, is an expression of His grace and favour, and it is not based on human merit, but rather on YAHWEH’s sovereign choice, and His unconditional love.
4- THREE BLESSINGS – A PRECURSOR TO SOMETHING EQUALLY UNIQUE AS THE COVENANTAL NAME?
This blessing is actually a combination of three blessings. Each of the three verses is a different blessing. Some Bible Commentators see it as a precursor, as in the sense of an introduction to the concept of Trinity;
– “God the Father blesses and keeps His children. – God the Son makes God’s face to shine on us and brings us grace. – God the Holy Spirit communicates God’s attention to us, and gives us peace.” – David Guzik
5- THRICE MENTIONED NAME – THE ONLY SOURCE OF ALL BLESSINGS
This threefold blessing tell us that God is the source of all blessings. Without God involved in our lives, it would be a waste of time, effort and energy. Therefore, the thrice emphasis of YAHWEH, the wonderful name of God.
– “The thrice-mentioned YHWH, which grammatically [speaking,] need not be repeated, and the final resounding “I will [surely] bless you,” serve to heighten the emphasis that the God of Israel is the source of all grace, blessing, hope, and peace.” – R. Dennis Cole
How wonderful it is to realise who our God is!!! The God whom we are called to serve is, an amazing God. His heart and His love is unparalleled. All what we have seen above, can be proved beyond doubt, when we see the Son of God hanging, on the Cross of Calvary. YAHWEH, the LORD God Almighty, is a covenant keeping God. He is a promise keeping God. He promised redemption in the Garden of Eden, and He has accomplished it. HalleluYah! Soli Deo Gloria!!!
"The priests were solemnly to bless the people in the name of the Lord. To be under the almighty protection of God our Saviour; to enjoy his favour as the smile of a loving Father, or as the cheering beams of the sun; while he mercifully forgives our sins, supplies our wants, consoles the heart, and prepares us by his grace for eternal glory; these things form the substance of this blessing, and the sum total of all blessings."
