One of the best know songs, if we can call it so, is the Doxology. These words were written by Thomas Ken, an Anglican Bishop, in 1674, as the part of his larger hymn, that was to be sung as the Morning, Evening and Midnight hymn. These particulars words, which we popularly know as, the doxology, is the last stanza of the, of these three hymns.
This doxology, is translated into many different languages. We must have heard the beautiful doxology, at least once, if not in our own language, but at least in English. I personally like it a lot. It has beautiful words, with heart stirring meaning and melody.
– “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.”
Two Greek words, are used in the word doxology: DOXA – means “GLORY” and LOGOS – means “SPEAKING.” Therefore, a “doxology” is an expression of a Christian’s praise, giving all the glory to God, because He alone deserves it.
Use of doxology, has been a Christian tradition, since a very long time, in the history of Church. The intention being, to start and to end, the worship service, with a hymn of praise, to the Triune God – The FATHER, the SON and the HOLY GHOST. Such a desire in very much in line with the holy Scriptures. The Word of God is fully of verses where people have longed to worship God Almighty, for WHO He is, and for all WHAT He has done.
– “6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!” – Psalm 150:6
– “36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” – Romans 11:36
– “1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights! 2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! 3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light! 4 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens!” – Psalm 148:1-4
– “13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.” – Psalm 148:13
How are we approaching this LORD’s Day? What thoughts are running in our minds? What music, and what melody, is stirring our hearts this day? What songs are we wanting to sing on this special and amazing day? May we choose, and always choose, to praise and worship the LORD God Almighty, our Redeemer, over and above, any urge to amplify our struggles and our storms. The LORD who called us, is faithful. He will take care of everything that concerns us. Let us then, focus on praising and worshipping our LORD, who alone deserves, all praise, all honour and all glory. HalleluYah! Even so, the LORD help us.
"I need to worship because without it I can forget that I have a big God beside me and live in fear. I need to worship because without it I can forget his calling and begin to live in a spirit of self-preoccupation. I need to worship because without it I lose a sense of wonder and gratitude and plod through life with blinders on. I need worship because my natural tendency is toward self-reliance and stubborn independence."
