Knowing something, and doing the same, are two entirely different things. Many people know what is right and good, but but they don’t display any inclination to do the right thing. They simply cannot get themselves beyond the mere knowledge. This is just as good as not knowing. In fact, it is worse than not knowing at all.
Yesterday, we mediated upon Psalm 1:1, and looked at the steady decline into depravity, of someone, who goes on the wrong path. Today, let us meditate on Psalm 1:2 to know, “WHAT THEN SHOULD WE DO?” This question helps us to know the importance of doing the right thing, as a logical and firm follow up to the knowledge of the good and the right thing, that we possess.
– “2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” – Psalms 1:2
There are three things that we can observe, from the above verse, about this man, mentioned in verse 2. These three are important for us, as Christians.
1- DELIGHTS
First thing we can notice is that – “But his delight is in…” This man DELIGHTS to do a certain thing. Delight means – “a feeling of great pleasure, satisfaction, or happiness:” – Cambridge Dictionary. This indicates the heart of the person, where his innermost cravings dwell. It tells us about the longings and the desires of this man. It helps us know what is it, that is most important to this man.
– “21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” – Matthew 6:21
2- IN THE LAW OF THE LORD
The righteous man DELIGHTS not in the things of this world. His heart is not longing for temporal and perishable things, even though they may be good; and in some cases, necessary for life. The DELIGHT – deep longing of the heart – of this man is in the Law of the LORD, His God. What a longing to have, as a Christian. This tells us about what is considered by this man as, the most important thing in his life. This tell us about the significance of the Word of God, the Bible, in his life.
– “14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches…16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word…35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.” – Psalm 119:14,16,35
3- HE MEDITATES DAY AND NIGHT – THE LAW OF THE LORD
Acting upon the knowledge one possesses, is the differentiator between success and failure. A successful man always acts upon the knowledge he has. The man mentioned in Psalm 1, does not do certain things; but he one thing with all his heart – he DELIGHTS in the Law of the LORD; then he goes a step further – “…and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Good to pay attention to the words – he does not merely meditate on the law of the LORD. He does so, day and night – indicating his intent, his purpose and his only desire, which he pursues passionately.
– “The righteous man ponders the word of God. He does not just hear it and forget it; he thinks about it. Christians should meditate on God’s word!” – David Guzik
How about us, this morning? What place does the Bible have in our lives? How much time do we spend upon reading and meditating the written Word of God? Do we DELIGHT in the Law of the LORD? Do we long to read our Bibles? Do we deeply long to meditate upon it, day and night? Yes, day and night? May the LORD help us to be people who do the right thing with all our heart, day and night. Even so, the LORD help us.
"What makes you happy? What gets you excited? This is a good way to see what is important to you. If personal pleasure is the only thing that makes you happy, then you are a selfish, self-centered person. If being with your family or friends delights you, that can be better, but it still falls short. The righteous man finds his delight…in the law of the LORD."
