When we thank people, we do it normally because of some specific reason. They must have helped us in some way or the other. Hence, we thank them. When it comes to God, do we look for a reason to thank Him? I would say, we don’t need any reason to thank God. Not because there are no reasons that we should thank God for. Rather, there are million and one reasons to thank God for. In fact, the reasons to thank God are so many that, it is impossible for us to even count them. Even if we start today, we may well count all our lives, and still would fall woefully short.
– “Thanksgiving is a recurring theme in the Psalms and throughout the Bible…which instructs believers to give thanks in all circumstances. This phrase underscores the importance of recognizing God’s provision and blessings, fostering a heart of humility and dependence on Him.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
Many times we don’t realise all what the LORD Jesus had blessed us with. Most of us may not see the air we breathe as a blessing from God, even though we acknowledge that God is Creator of all things visible and invisible. How about the sun, moon and the stars? How about the sunshine which is absolutely essential for photosynthesis? What about the rains and rivers and the role they play in the ecosystem? How about the solar system? Scientists say, if the earth were two feet closer to sun, from its current position, it would become too hot for life to exist on earth. If the earth were two feet away from its current position, it would become too cold for life to exist on earth. Now, do we count all the above as blessings from God? Therefore, let us thank God simply “FOR NO REASON” my dear brothers and sisters.
For our meditation this morning, let us look at Psalm 69:30-32, and see what can we learn about thanksgiving. David has deep insights into worship and thanksgiving, because he is primarily a heartful worshipper of God, more than anything else in his life.
– “30 I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. 31 This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. 32 When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive.” – Psalm 69:30-32
There are three things that we cal learn from the above Bible portion. Let us look at them.
1- “I WILL PRAISE THE NAME OF GOD WITH A SONG; I WILL MAGNIFY HIM WITH THANKSGIVING.”
We can have a SONG of THANKSGIVING for our God, which is our own. A song of thanks that is made up of all what the good, gracious and merciful LORD had done for us. That would be a great song; a rich song; a powerful song of praise! Reason? It is a song born out of our personal experience of all what the LORD had done for us. Do we realise that all what God had done in our lives can be a beautiful song of thanksgiving for us?
– “15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” – Hebrews 13:15
2- “THIS WILL PLEASE THE LORD MORE THAN AN OX OR A BULL…”
The LORD loves a thankful and grateful heart. Our thankfulness and gratitude is the best form of worship that we can ever offer to the LORD Jesus Christ. This is the reason why David the Psalmist says, such a SONG OF THANKSGIVING will please the LORD more than the offering of an ox or a bull. Do we realise what actually pleases the LORD our God?
– “7 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God…9 I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills…12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine…14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High…23 The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!” – Psalm 50:7, 9-10, 12, 14, 23
3- “WHEN THE HUMBLE SEE IT THEY WILL BE GLAD; YOU WHO SEEK GOD, LET YOUR HEARTS REVIVE.”
Our song of thanksgiving not only pleases the LORD our God, but it can be an inspirational testimony to many others around us. Fellow Christian brothers and sisters would be glad to hear our song of thanksgiving. Our song can bless their hearts, because of our gratitude to God. Don’t know how many hearts are hurting and in pain. Don’t know how many hearts are in doubt and fear. When they hear all what our LORD had done in our lives, it will surely bring encouragement, inspiration and hope in their lives. Do we realise all what our simple song of thanksgiving can do in someone else’s life?
– “19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” – Ephesians 5:19-20
So what is stopping us my dear brothers and sisters? Let us begin to sing our very own SONG of THANKSGIVING simply “FOR NO REASON” as an act of our worship, with all our heart, for the LORD our God. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The act of praising God’s name signifies acknowledging His character and deeds, as His name represents His essence and attributes. This practice is seen throughout Scripture, such as in Exodus 15:1-2, where Moses and the Israelites sing a song of praise after crossing the Red Sea. The use of song in worship is a timeless expression of devotion and reverence, transcending cultural and historical boundaries."
