“LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY”

The disciples of the LORD Jesus had heard many great things from the LORD. The disciples also witnessed many mighty miracles that our LORD had done. However, in Luke 11:1 we see one of the disciples making a specific request to the LORD Jesus. It is very interesting to see what this particular disciple was asking the LORD Jesus for.
– “​1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” – Luke 11:1

What an amazing request this disciple of the LORD had! Don’t you think so? He was not asking for great spiritual truths to be revealed to him. He was not seeking for a great miracle in his life. He was asking the LORD Jesus to teach him, and the rest of the disciples how to pray.

The request of this unnamed disciple speaks of his heart and his desire. It speaks about what is important in his perspective. It tells us about his priorities and his longings. It also tells us that he had been keenly observing the LORD Jesus and His personal life, especially His private prayer life. 

The LORD Jesus’ personal prayers were private. When the crowds left, Jesus withdrew to solitary times of prayer. Many times overnight. This is what the Bible records for us. This unnamed disciple took note of this private prayer life of the LORD Jesus, and desired that he too would pray like his Master and his LORD. 
– “16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” – Luke 5:16
– “35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” – Mark 1:35
– “12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.” – Luke 6:12

What are we desiring from the LORD Jesus? What are we asking the LORD Jesus for? Are we asking for material things? Are we seeking God for earthly things? Are we asking our LORD for passing and perishable things? Let us desire for higher things. Let us seek the LORD Jesus for precious and priceless things. Let us ask God for things that will truly help us and truly shape us into the person that the LORD so intently desires. Let us align ourselves with God’s purposes. Let us align ourselves with kingdom principles. Let us align ourselves with eternal things of God. The rest will be taken care of by the LORD Jesus, as He had promised.
– “33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
Even so, the LORD Jesus help us.
