The LORD our God has made prayer and the Bible, as a provision for us to communicate with Him, and know His heart. Prayer connects us directly with God; while the Word of God reveals to us the heart and the purposes of God for us. As Christians we have to make the best use of these two provisions, so that we are strengthened, encouraged and get the much needed purpose and direction in our lives.
Prayer has to be accompanied by faith in the LORD. Even as we pray, we have to learn to wait for God to act. These three, our PRAYER, our FAITH and our WAITING form the foundational pillars of a robust Christian. Let us consider these three, this morning.
1- PRAYER
– Prayer is much larger than just our heart cry to God, seeking His face to meet all our needs.
– Prayer is the sacred communion with God where we “invest” our time, effort and energy to build our relationship with God.
– “14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” – 1 John 5:14-15
– “16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
2- FAITH
– Faith is trusting God to provide all what is needed by us because He had promised us to do so.
– Even when God seems to be silent we don’t lose our faith and trust in God. We continue to trust Him.
– Even when God does not answer our prayers and meet our needs, we still hold on to Him because only God knows what is good for us.
– If it is good for us, He will never ever withhold it from us.
– “1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1
– “6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6
3- WAITING
– Waiting is where our faith is tested whether we truly trust God to provide all that is needed or not.
– Waiting can make or break our faith.
– Waiting is specifically intended to help us strengthen our faith and trust in God and His goodness.
– Abraham had to wait for Isaac. Yet the impatience of Sarah and Abraham led to hard times.
– Our impatience can disrupt, delay and divert the plans of God, but they cannot be destabilised or destroyed.
– “1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.” – Genesis 16:1-2
– “17 Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls—18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” – Habakkuk 3:17-18
Dear brothers and sisters as we journey through our lives as Christians, let us learn to spend much time in PRAYER. As we pray, let us learn to pray with FAITH in the goodness of the LORD Jesus to meet all our needs. As we pray with faith in God, let us learn to WAIT patiently upon God to act. For in waiting upon our LORD is the test of our prayer and faith. Even so, the LORD Jesus help us.
"When we bring things to God, when we communicate with Him and listen for His guidance, we leave changed. We leave comforted, we leave convicted, we leave with hope, we leave knowing we are not alone, we leave with gratitude, and we leave with a transformed mind and renewed perspective. Prayer changes things, yes, and it also changes us!"
