Human life is a set full of choices. Many voices call our heart’s attention, and we have to make a choice about those calls. As Christians, the call of our LORD Jesus takes precedence over every other call that we will hear in this world. Our Master had called us, just as He had called Matthew, Peter, John and James. Just as He gave them a responsibility, the LORD Jesus, has given is also the responsibility.
– “18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.” – Matthew 28:18-20
The call of God that our LORD gives, has two aspects to it.
– One, the LORD calls us out of darkness into His marvellous light.
– Two, the ones thus called are entrusted with the responsibility live a life that reflects our changed life, and thereby be the witnesses, ambassadors and disciples of the LORD Jesus.
– “9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.” – 1 Peter 2:9-10
On 23 October 1984 Urbano Gomez, poisoned in his mind by false and evil talk, attends a Protestant church in Peru, with his wife. Unknown to her he has a pistol and knife hidden in his saddlebag, intending to kill the pastor if he shows any sign of inappropriate behaviour. He finds that all is decently done and is drawn to give his heart to Christ during the altar call. He will become an evangelist and teacher with Heart Cry Mission. How wonderful isn’t it? This is *”THE IRRESISTIBLE CALL OF GOD!”*
Heeding to the LORD Jesus’ call to be His ambassadors, which is the second part of the “THE IRRESISTIBLE CALL OF GOD,” what we normally call as the GREAT COMMISSION, many a disciple of the LORD, have faithfully and obediently ventured into the world to proclaim the Good News of great joy to the whole world. This particular call is a call to proclaim the redemption available in the LORD Jesus. However, this call involves suffering and sacrifice.
On 23 October 1803 Henry Martyn, who will later to become a remarkable missionary to the peoples of India and Persia, is ordained and given charge of a Church at Lolworth, Cambridgeshire, England, as an Anglican priest. A “chance encounter” with Charles Simeon, leads Henry Martyn to become a missionary.
On 23 October 1819 Hiram Bingham, Asa Thurston, and other missionaries sail for the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) to undertake what will be a successful evangelistic work.
On 23 October 1825 Pliny Fisk, a thirty-three year old young pioneer missionary to Syria, is called to his heavenly home. He had just begun a regular Arabic Sunday service, and had nearly completed an English-Arabic dictionary.
Dear brothers and sisters, many a child of God served their LORD and their Redeemer faithfully and sacrificially heeding to “THE IRRESISTIBLE CALL OF GOD” in their lives. They willingly suffered and joyfully sacrificed for the call of God upon their lives. How about us? Do we know that God is calling us too? Have we realised that the voice of our LORD Jesus is calling us to be His witnesses and ambassadors? Have we recognised that this call of our LORD and Saviour is far more important than anything else in our lives? May we seek the LORD Jesus, and by His grace do whatever He is calling us to. Even so, the LORD help us.
"God has called us to be an ambassador for Christ, of Christ. God has saved us so that we can be his ambassador. God has given us roles and responsibilities in our lives, for His glory, for his kingdom."
