What is our qualification to come into the presence of the God of creation? With what right can we enter into His holy and glorious presence? What merits can we claim to be in the audience of the LORD God Almighty, the Most High God, the LORD Jesus Christ? Honestly speaking we have nine whatsoever. Nothing that we may have accomplished, and nothing we may have earned, can give us the right to come into God’s presence. David, writing the Psalm five, give us an insightful answer to the question we are considering.
– ‘7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.” – Psalm 5:7
The sole criteria, our merit and the only qualification that we may ever claim to be our “right” to enter into God’s presence is, God’s mercy, goodness, grace and His love. But for our LORD Jesus’ mercy, there is nothing that we claim to be our right, our merit, nor our qualification.
– “David approaches the sanctuary trusting not in his own righteousness but in God’s covenant mercy. God’s loving devotion, revealed in His faithful dealings with Israel, provides the only basis for entering His presence. The tabernacle was the appointed place where the LORD made His dwelling known among His people, yet even the king came as a dependent worshiper before the holy God.” – Berean Study Bible Notes.
When we come to fully realise that, we have no influence over God, and it is purely because of His mercy that we have all what we have, including this privilege and the honour bestowed upon us, to enter into His presence, we will “fear” God, and will worship Him wholeheartedly in reverence and awe. This is the only appropriate response for the LORD’s immeasurable mercy, love, grace and goodness towards us…the fallen human beings.
– “6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. 7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand…” – Psalm 95:6-7
Dear brothers and sisters, how is it with us this morning? What about our understanding about ourselves, and our qualifying standards and merits, to enter into God’s presence. Hopefully we are in agreement with David in what he expresses in Psalm 5:7. Even so, the LORD Jesus help us.
"But as for me, I will come into thy house." I will not stand at a distance, I will come into thy sanctuary, just as a child comes into his father's house. But I will not come there by my own merits; no, I have a multitude of sins, and therefore I will come in the multitude of thy mercy. I will approach thee with confidence because of thy immeasurable grace."
