I have heard many times people quoting in prayer, the promise of Jesus from Mark 11:24 – “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”* Many have built their theology [understanding about God] basing on this promise. *They believe that we can ask God whatever we think we need, and God is obligated to give it, because, after all, this is His promise to us. Isn’t it?
I call this THE ‘WHATEVER’ PRAYER. Such an interpretation of the Bible is called “Proof Text Method.” True God promises that He will answer our call for help. But how do we understand this, and all such promises? The Apostle John amplifies and expounds the promise of Jesus, in his epistle, 1 John 5:14-15 – “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”Jesus, at a very critical and extremely stressful time, prays this way three times in the Garden of Gethsemane – “39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” – Matthew 26:39
Therefore, let us learn to seek the LORD for our needs according to His will. Let us know that it is God’s will, and not our need, that takes precedence…and rightly so – for the LORD know what is best for us!
"And shall I pray Thee change Thy will, my Father, Until it be according unto mine? But, no, Lord, no, that never shall be, rather I pray Thee blend my human will with Thine."
