Psalm 115:14-15 is a beautiful prayer…a wish and a desire for someone the author loves and cares about deeply.
“14 May the LORD give you increase, you and your children!
15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!”
How wonderful it would be if someone wished these words for us and our children? I am sure we all would love it. Now how about praying the above prayer for our enemies?
The LORD spoke on this topic, and has already given us clear instructions in Luke 6:27-29, 32…
“27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also…32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.”
The reason for such an out-of-the-world behaviour and ethical standard, is because of the LORD our God – “35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.” Luke 6:35-36
Can we pray to the LORD to help us be like Him? Is that the goal of our sanctification process? Are we not being made into the image of our Saviour Jesus Christ? It is only reasonable and apt to wish good our enemies and thereby be like our Father in heaven.
"Our responsibility to love our enemies is grounded in the fact that God providentially loves the just and the unjust."
