We saw yesterday, about the man who fears the LORD, and delights greatly in His commandments. Herein is the key to every other thing in life. We seek God in prayer, for so many things in life. Many of our prayers are legitimate needs, if not all. The key to a blessed life is not in seeking God to answer our prayers. Yes, prayer is good and important. However, when we focus our hearts and our attention to “fear” the LORD, and delighting ourselves greatly, in His commandments, God will take care of all that we need – “The LORD is my Shepherd and [we are His obediently following sheep; therefore,] I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1
What happens to a man who “fears the LORD, and delights greatly in His commandments” is in the rest of the verses from Psalm 112. For this morning let us look at verses two and three.
– “2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.” – Psalm 112:2-3
Psalm 112:2-3 talks about blessings on the family front, and the material needs. Let us list the familial and material blessings that one would be blessed with.
1- His seed shall be mighty upon earth.
2- The generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3- Wealth and riches shall be in his house.
4- His righteousness endureth for ever.
When one is UPRIGHT in all his ways, his seed shall be blessed. A caution for us – do not go the way, the world goes about, “mighty” and “great” upon the earth.
– “‘Mighty’ here means being of recognised stature or standing rather than being physically strong.” – James Montgomery Boice
When one thinks, speaks and walks on the RIGHTEOUS PATHS of the LORD, “wealth” and “riches” will be added to our lives, in proportion to our needs, and according to the purposes that God has for us, and towards others, through us. Let us remember this key, always.
– “The prosperity promised in the present verses may be largely material, but a closer look reveals the moral and spiritual terms which make it an instrument of good.” – Derek Kidner
The desire, and the focus, of a Christian should be, on the uprightness of our thoughts, words and deeds, and not the familial and material blessings. The heart and its desires indicate the direction of our walk. When they are not properly aligned with God’s purposes and intentions, they surely will lead us astray. So, let us not focus much on perishable things.
Instead of being consumed by familial and material blessings, and wanting them desperately, we ought to be seeking the righteousness of God. When we do so, our “righteousness will endure forever.”
– “31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:31-33
Let us choose wisely. Even so the LORD help us.
"If any one should desire to leave behind him a flourishing posterity, let him not think to accomplish it by accumulating heaps of gold and silver, and leaving them behind him; but by rightly recognising God and serving Him; and commending his children to the guardianship and protection of God."
