Justice and righteousness are the two sides of the same coin, in the sight of the LORD God Almighty. He wants us, as His children, followers, disciples and ambassadors, to be just and righteous in our thoughts, words and deeds. If we want it even simpler – be like Jesus, as seen in the gospels…an exact copy…an imitator of Christ.
King Solomon, who is also called, Solomon the wise, writes in Psalm 72, some very important lines, to elaborate this concept of justice and righteousness for our clearer understanding, and our immediate implementation.
Verse 1 beings thus – “1 Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son.” The LORD wants to give His justice and righteousness, to His people….are we interested in receiving it? Are we interested in implementing it?
Justice and righteousness are the character traits of God Almighty. It is his nature. It is who He is…just and righteous – ‘Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” – Psalm 89:14
How about us, Christians? What is our character? Do justice and righteousness form the foundation of our character? Do we passionately pursue them? Do we dispassionately apply them to everyone equally and fairly?
"Western views of justice are primarily focused on how things should be done—laws, rules, and what should happen when laws are broken. In Hebrew thought, justice is focused on what life should be like. Justice in the Hebrew world was concerned not just with laws, but with enhancing all human life, especially the social world."
