Waiting, which is more famously known as patience is, one of the toughest thing to do, for many of us. The Word of God exhorts us not to be disturbed by the wicked, but rather, to patiently wait upon the LORD.
– “7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.” – Psalms 37:7
The Bible also exhorts us to wait upon the LORD, especially during trials and tribulations.
– “1 I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.” – Psalms 40:1
Here under is a small list of people, who waited upon God. These people displayed faith and trust in God, during critical times in their lives. This, in other words is, waiting upon the LORD.
– Abraham waited for 25 years, before the promise of son was fulfilled.
– Hannah waited for many years, for a child.
– Joseph waited for 13 years, before he was lifted up.
– Moses waited for 40 years, before he could lead the people of God.
– Ruth waited for a husband, when she lost her everything.
– David waited to be kept safe, from his enemies, before he was made the king, as promised.
– Elijah waited for three and half years for rain.
– Job waited patiently, and with unwavering faith in the LORD, for his sufferings to end.
Our LORD Himself waited, before He embarked upon His momentous ministry…
– The LORD Jesus waited for 30 years, before He began His earthly ministry.
William Barclay, a great servant of God, whose commentary on the Bible is well received, defines waiting and patience, for a Christian, this way…
– “The word [patience] never means the spirit which sits with folded hands and simply bears things. It is victorious endurance (and) constancy under trial. It is Christian steadfastness, the brave and courageous acceptance of everything life can do to us, and the transmuting of even the worst into another step on the upward way. It is the courageous and triumphant ability to bear things, which enables a man to pass breaking point and not to break, and always to greet the unseen with a cheer.”
May the LORD help us to learn the lesson of waiting…learn the art of waiting patiently upon the LORD. Unless we learn to wait upon the LORD, we are not properly prepared for the walk as a Christian, and neither for the ministry. All the great men and women of God, have gone through this school of learning. Even so, the LORD help us.
"God knows what we need, and if he wants us to wait, it’s always for our good. Our calling is simply faithfulness. And if we trust in him, we know that he will direct our steps and point us to our next destination. He will say, “Go,” when we need to go—but not before then."
