With all its flaws, democracy is still the best among the lot. It has, in comparison with the other forms of governance, better chances to be a force for good. What Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, during Second World War, says is, enlightening, and worth remembering – ‘Many forms of government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” He is honest and transparent in his opinion.
The system of governance, whatever it could be, will fail for certainty, because, such is the sickness that haunts man. The problem with man is his heart. Unless the heart is changed and transformed, even the noblest of intentions wouldn’t take long before they get corrupted, and decay. Whatever one gives to man, he will ultimately spoil it, and ruin it. There is no ability in human beings to hold anything good, and increase its goodness for the benefit and the blessing of all humanity. This is the reality, and we can see it in everything, that man has ever created.
The Bible states the problem of human beings, and also gives us the solution – “20 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.”
“23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. 24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, And put perverse lips far from you. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. 26 Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. 27 Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.” – Proverbs 4:20-27
The above solution, is intricately and inalienably linked with our heart, that needs to be touched and transformed, by the LORD Jesus Christ. Without such a transformation, it is impossible to be of much good. Some individuals may demonstrate greater amount of good in their thoughts and actions, than the others. However, ultimately, all us fall way short of being a blessing, to anyone, including ourselves.
A point to note – even well intending Christians, can go terribly wrong, if we do not intentionally, continue to walk, on the Narrow Path. For this, we need to lean on the LORD, and learn from Him on a daily basis, all our lives. Without the intervention, and the involvement of the LORD, in our lives, everything comes back to square one.
"The creed of our democracy is that liberty is acquired and kept by men and women who are strong and self-reliant, and possessed of such wisdom as God gives mankind – men and women who are just, and understanding, and generous to others -- men and women who are capable of disciplining themselves. For they are the rulers and they must rule themselves."
