Each of us, even Christians, need a lot of things in life for our survival and sustenance. Life simply cannot move forward if those needs are not addressed appropriately, and met properly. Everyone of us have mental, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual needs. For such were we created by the LORD God Almighty, our Creator.
Robert Robinson at the young age of 22, in 1758, wrote an enduring hymn which we sing even today, even after 268 years. The hymn rouses our spirits, and warms our hearts with unmatched power. The hymn that we are talking about is the timeless hymn “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” – a precious and priceless piece of poetry set to heart touching melody and music.
Robert Robinson was touched by God in 1752, when he heard the great George Whitfield speak about coming God’s wrath. It took Robinson, three more years of struggle to commit himself fully to the LORD Jesus Christ. Finally in 1755, as a 20 year old, he commits himself fully to the LORD, and becomes a Pastor. One day, as he was preparing for a sermon, he wanted to write a hymn which reflected his sermon theme, so in 1758 he writes the hymn “COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING.” Today, 27 September happens to be the day Robert Robinson was born in 1735 – into a humble but godly family.
The hymn “COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING” reflects the sufficiency of the grace of God, and the human frailty and utter dependence upon the LORD Jesus for our lives. If not for the LORD Jesus, the Shepherd of our souls, to surround us, sustain us and safely keep us, we would not last even for a moment to be on our own. Knowing this well, the LORD our heavenly Father has made the fully provision for us in the LORD Jesus Christ, who is the *”FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING”*
– “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” – Ephesians 1:3-14
Dear brothers and sisters, DO WE NEED ANYTHING MORE? If we have Christ our LORD with us, what more do we need? What more would we want and desire dear friends? Would anything else can even come to the glory and the majesty of the LORD Jesus Christ? Would anything and anyone make us feel satisfied and secured, as does the Saviour who chose to suffer and die for us on the cross of Calvary? It is silly to even draw such a parallel. Therefore, let us shout out loudly…
– “Come, thou Fount of every blessing; tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love!” – Robert Robinson – “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
Even so, the LORD Jesus help us.
"Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood."
