Sadhu has many meanings, one of which is, a gentle person. A Christian, as portrayed in the New Testament is that of a gentle person. Not just a gentle person, but also a person who endures hardships, and does not retaliate against his enemies, but faithfully follows his God and Redeemer.
Sadhu Sundar Singh had quite a few problems because of his faith. He was poisoned by his own family when he declared to them that he had become a Christian. He almost died because of it. However the LORD miraculously saved Sundar from certain death. Such encounters with death, were not very uncommon to this servant of God. He was called the “Apostle With The Bleeding Feet” because he walked barefoot, in sand and in snow. Hunger, rejection, difficulties and problems were common occurrences in his life.
Despite all the struggles, Sundar Singh never gave up his desire to serve his Saviour. He willingly and gladly faced all that was thrown at him with a cheerful heart, counting it as an honour to suffer for His Master and Redeemer.
Sadhu Sundar Singh’s thoughts on prayers reveals his deep love for God – “Prayer does not mean asking God for all kinds of things we want, it is rather the desire for God Himself, the only Giver of Life.”
His only passion in life had been to preach the gospel and be a true and faithful witness to the LORD Jesus Christ, who saved him. Sadhu Sundar Singh says – “I am not worthy to follow in the steps of my Lord, but, like Him, I want no home, no possessions. Like Him I will belong to the road, sharing the suffering of my people, eating with those who will give me shelter, and telling all men of the love of God.”
May the LORD raise many more like this man. May the LORD touch us, and make us to be true, faithful and obedient disciples.
"The cross is like a walnut whose outer rind is bitter, but the inner kernel is pleasant and invigorating. So the cross does not offer any charm of outward appearance, but to the cross-bearer its true character is revealed, and he finds in it the choicest sweets of spiritual peace."
