For every choice one makes, there is an end result. The end of the road for walking the Narrow Path is totally different from, choosing to walk in the ways of the world. There is simply no comparison between the two. One ends in eternal joy, peace and blessing; while the other ends in eternal irrelevance, darkness and destruction. This is the essence of Psalm 1.
Let us look at verse six, which beautifully sums it all up, and brings to fore the all important reality…the reality and the result of the choice made.
– “6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” – Psalm 1:6
The LORD knows the end of both the “righteous” and the worldly. He is the Judge who pronounces the judgement. He declares who is blessed and who is cursed. It is the result or the end of the path we chose to walk upon. Sadly, when the just Judge declares His judgement, it cannot be reversed. The two final positions are…
1- “For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous;”
LORD in English does not bring out its full meaning, unless we go deeper into its Hebrew roots. The LORD is YAHWEH, the covenant name of God. This tells us that God has bound Himself with the covenant He made with Abraham and by default to their generations.
The word “KNOWETH” which is translated as “GUARDS” in some translations is from the Hebrew word, “Yada” which is much more than the LORD knowing things. In its meaning, it contains the care, concern, protection and the providence of the LORD.
– “…guards the path…” shows active, personal oversight. • Like a shepherd, He watches, guides, and protects (Psalm 23:1-3; John 10:3-4). • Proverbs 2:8 echoes, “He guards the paths of justice and protects the way of His saints.” • “Guard” means He both defends from danger (Psalm 91:11) and directs toward blessing (Psalm 37:23).” – Berean Study Bible Notes
2- “but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
By contrast, the way of the ungodly simply leads them to perish – complete destruction. What a tragedy it is. For the pleasure of short time, this man loses that which is far more precious and priceless, and that which he cannot earn it or buy it.
UNGODLY or WICKED are thus punished because they wilfully choose to disobey God and all His commands. Not only that, they reject every offer of God to rescue them and rectify the error. They choose active and intentional rebellion over rescuer and redemption.
– “…of the wicked…” refers to those who reject God’s authority. • Wickedness is not merely social misbehaviour; it is wilful rebellion against God (Psalm 14:1; Romans 1:18-21). • Their “way” seems free but is enslaved to sin (John 8:34) and leads away from life (Proverbs 4:19).” – Berean Study Bible Notes
May we always remember that, once the just and righteous Judge pronounces His fair judgement, it cannot be, and will not be reversed. May better sense prevail upon the world. May the LORD grant us the grace, discernment and wisdom, to walk in His path…the Narrow Path. The LORD help us not to give up, or give in, but instead, persevere to always walk on the path, that God wants us to walk upon, despite all its struggles and storms. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The doom of the ungodly is fixed, but whenever the sinner becomes sensible of this guilt and misery, he may be admitted into the company of the righteous by Christ the living way, and become in Christ a new creature. He has new desires, new pleasures, hopes, fears, sorrows, companions, and employments. His thoughts, words, and actions are changed. He enters on a new state, and bears a new character. Behold, all things are become new by Divine grace, which changes his soul into the image of the Redeemer. How different the character and end of the ungodly!"
