If ever one were to devote our entire time, effort and energies, from the moment we are able to grasp and understand matters of human life, till the last day of our lives, we would still be greatly found wanting, if we wish to praise our God. No amount of time would be sufficiently enough to praise God for all He has done for us. Such is the greatness of the God of all creation, the God of the Bible. Have we, at any time, attempted praising God in such a manner?
Well, here we see in Psalm 145, David attempting to sing about God’s majesty and greatness. David had a great and deep understanding about God. His psalms are a testimony to it. He grasped the greatness, majesty and infiniteness of his God. Therefore he writes…
– “1 I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever. 3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable.” – Psalm 145:1-3
James Montgomery Boice, commenting on Psalm 145 and David, says…
– “Psalm 145 is indeed a monumental praise psalm, a fit summary of all David had learned about God during a long lifetime of following hard after the Almighty.” – James Montgomery Boice
The first three verses of Psalm 145 gives us a great insight into who God is, and what should we be doing for the rest of our lives. This reflects David’s understanding of who his God is, and what he wishes to do, for the rest of his life.
– “I will extol You, my God, O King”
– “I will bless Your name forever and ever”
– “Every day I will bless You”
– “I will praise Your name forever and ever”
– “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised”
– “His greatness is unsearchable.”
1- Four times David says “I WILL” which indicated his desire and his determination in wanting to praise the LORD God Almighty.
2- He uses the words “FOREVER” and “EVER” twice each, with “EVERY DAY” thrown in, to indicate, the time frame of his desire to praise God.
3- He desires to praise his God, EVERY DAY, for the rest of his life, and then, goes on to want to do it, FOREVER and EVER.
4- GREAT, GREATLY and GREATNESS are used to describe who God truly is. God, as David sees Him, is great, and unsearchable, and therefore, has to be greatly praised.
The above observations of Psalm 145:1-3 speaks about David’s deep and clear understanding of who his God is. It also tells us about what David deeply desires, and wants to do, with all his heart, every day of his life, and forever and ever.
What about us dear brothers and sisters? What is occupying our hearts and minds? What do we want to do for the rest of our lives? What do we desire to do forever and ever? What is the single most burning desire in our hearts? Is it to praise our LORD and our Redeemer?
"What's closest to your heart is what you talk about, and if God is close to your heart, you'll talk about Him."
