GUILE is unseen, and is in our hearts. It is uncleanness in our hearts, and its motives being unrighteous. GRACE is visible in multiple ways in our lives. It is an overflow of love, truthfulness, gentleness and humility despite all an individual is unjustly subjected to. Purity of heart, and graciousness on our lips, is not common among the human beings, in general.
When the wisdom of the Proverbs 22:11 declares…
– “11 He who loves purity of heart And whose speech is gracious will have the king as his friend.”
…there is much more at stake, than just purity in our hearts and grace on our lips. It speaks of the person, his personality, his character and his whole being…who he is, and what he is in reality. The purity of our hearts, and the grace in our words reveal who we actually are.
The LORD Jesus, during the Sermon on the Mount, says…
– “8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” – Matthew 5:8
The LORD says this in Proverbs 16:13…
– “13 Righteous lips are a king’s delight, and he who speaks honestly is beloved.”
The Word of God says this in Ecclesiastes 10:12…
– “12 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, but the lips of a fool consume him.”
The LORD Jesus, speaking to the people declares…
– 43 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” – Luke 6:43-45
I think, what Proverbs is talking, and what our LORD is speaking in Matthew 5:8 and in Luke 6:43-45, are the same – they are the fruit of what is deep within our hearts. They both are taking about the character of a person, in simple words. The fruit of our life, is nothing but the character of our life. Purity or guilesness in our hearts, and grace on our lips, are merely indicators of much deeper things, that are at work in our lives, which produce these fruit, than they being, merely an end in themselves.
What kind of fruit are we bearing? Is guilelessness and grace the fruit that we are bearing? What kind of a tree are we? Is the LORD Jesus central in our lives? Is what the LORD taught us, being followed by us? May the LORD help us to be fruitful for His glory and for the blessing of His people. May our hearts be pure and guileless, and may our lips drip with grace.
"...there is such a thing as pureness of heart; as where the grace of God is; where there is pure love to God, Christ, and to holy and heavenly things and persons; where there is pure and unfeigned faith in Christ, and a purifying hope of eternal life by him; where the Holy Spirit dwells as a sanctifier, and Christ dwells by faith; where there is sincerity and integrity; and where the heart is sprinkled by the blood of Christ from an evil conscience: and, though none are entirely free from impurity of flesh and spirit, yet every good man hates the impurity that is in him, and loves purity, and is desirous of it, and makes use of all means for it; and he [God] loves a man of a pure heart..."
