“Amazing Grace” is one of those hymns that most people would know, all over the Christian world. What amazing words are penned by John Newton! Heart stirring words, that speak with such raw power to the heart of man. It speaks about the wretchedness of man’s heart, and the amazing grace of God!
On 10 March 1747, John Newton, was sailing on a slave ship. A huge storm hits it. This storm compels John Newton to run to the LORD to seek shelter and safety. This storm helps him to come to the LORD, and be converted to Christ.
He eventually becomes an Anglican clergyman, the author of the famous hymn “Amazing Grace” and a zealous abolitionist. John Newton writes this about his conversion – “That 10th of March is a day much to be remembered by me; and I have never allowed it to pass unnoticed since the year 1748. For on that day the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.”
Let us draw inspiration from this servant of the Most High. Let us always remember, the manner in which the LORD touched and transformed our lives. Let that inspire us to live for our LORD and our Redeemer, and for His glory and His glory alone.
"Although my memory's fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Saviour."
