The second lesson that we can learn from the words of Jesus about prayer, found in Matthew 6:5-13, is HUMILITY. The LORD says, “6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
The point that Jesus is making is not so much about being secretive, but rather, it is about being normal, simple, grounded, insignificant and incognito, in relation to the power that is accessible to us, as His disciples. Therefore, it is being humble in spite of having direct access, through prayer, to the only true power Source.
Humility as a trait is not the normal and natural human trait to us. Thanks to sin and the fall, we have acquired the proud and arrogant nature of Lucifer. The ugly head of pomp, pride and arrogance rears its head all too often. Therefore the LORD says, “When you seek Me, don’t make a show or it. Humbly pray about your need in private.” Then the Father who sees us, and the heart behind the prayer, will answer us, according to His good pleasure, openly, so that everyone would come to know about it.
Let us learn to pray in humility and in obedience, that the LORD would answer us in His time, and that all the glory would go, only to the LORD. Let us not steal what belongs only to the LORD, buy seek Him in humility.
"Humility is perfect quietness of heart. It is to expect nothing, to wonder at nothing that is done to me, to feel nothing done against me. It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, and when I am blamed or despised. It is to have a blessed home in the Lord, where I can go in and shut the door, and kneel to my Father in secret, and am at peace as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and above is trouble."
