The Bible’s approach to our health is not merely the absence of sickness in our lives. The LORD, speaking through various scripture portions, helps us to understand that our health, as He sees it, is a wholistic and wholesome perspective. God defined wholesome and wholistic health, as I can see it, has eight dimensions to it. It includes our Mental, Emotional, Spiritual, Social, Work, Financial, Familial and Physical health – which accommodates all aspects of our life, that either contribute to our wellbeing, or alternatively, to our Ill health, by the stress and strain they generate in us.
“CSU [Colorado State University] Pueblo recognizes the importance of your well-being. Wellness comprises of eight mutually co-dependence dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, interpersonal, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, cultural, and financial. If any one of these dimensions is neglected over time, it will adversely affect one’s health, well-being, and quality of life. A well-rounded balance of these wellness dimensions provides holistic harmony to one’s personal well-being.”
Let us look at Psalm 23, which I think is one the most wholesome Scripture portion, that gives us a comprehensive perspective about God, and His concern for our overall and wholesome well-being.
– “1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.” – Psalm 23
James Montgomery Boice, Pastor of the Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and an American Reformed Christian theologian, Bible teacher, author, and speaker has these words about Psalm 23.
– Millions of people have memorized this psalm, even those who have learned few other Scripture portions. Ministers have used it to comfort people who are going through severe personal trials, suffering illness, or dying. For some, the words of this psalm have been the last they have ever uttered in life.” – James Montgomery Boice
The first verse and the last verse of Psalm 23 helps us realise that apart from desiring for God, we don’t need to be concerned or worried about anything in life. Yes, there would be troubles that will buffet us. There surely would be trials that will severely test us. Every storm and every struggle that we will face in our lives will affect our health, and our overall well-being. However, one does not need to be overwhelmed nor drown ourselves in depression or anguish. The fact that God is with us, should be our comfort in all our struggles and sufferings, and our balm of healing, to all our hurts and pain.
– “1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want…6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.” – Psalm 23:1,6
Please keep reading Psalm 23, and other relevant Scriptures, whenever dark clouds of doubt and fear overshadow us. The LORD who is our Shepherd, will dispel every depressing dark cloud, including every doubt, fear and pain. He is the only One who truly and deeply cares for our wholesome well-being.
– “17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. 20 He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken. 21 Evil shall slay the wicked, And those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. 22 The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.” – Psalm 34:17-22
Dear brothers and sisters, *LET GOD CARRY IT – “OUR HEALTH”* and let us not stress and strain about it. Our well-being is God’s utmost concern. On our part let us learn to trust God, and walk the path that He is leading us on, faithfully and obediently. Let us look to the LORD, and not to the boisterous dark waves of doubt and fear, hovering over and around us. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The Lord delights in your well-being. This is a fundamental and foundational truth. It speaks to the very heart of who God has revealed himself to be in every page of Scripture. And yet, we so often lose sight of this and live with distorted and twisted visions of who God is and what he is like. If we aren’t clear on who God is, we will greatly struggle to know who we are in Christ...the Lord not only delights in your well-being, but the Lord goes to unimaginable lengths to secure your well being. This is the heart of the Christian faith: God desires to restore humanity and creation to new life so deeply that he gives his own life that we might have life."
