We meet all kinds of people, in our lives. When we look at some, we want to walk in their ways. They become our role models. While looking for role models to emulate, the Bible cautions us to study their hearts, their motives, their methods, and their intent. Such a study reveals who they actually are.
– “17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day; 18 For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off.” – Proverbs 23:17-18
What the Bible wants to draw our attention to, is important, here in the above verses. There are four important things, for us to observe and meditate upon, and follow. Such a study, helps us be firmly rooted and grounded in God’s righteous path, and flourish forever. A blessing, which is of far more value, than the riches that a sinner may temporally enjoy.
– “This is an easy trap to fall into. On this side of eternity and the ultimate judgments of God it may seem that sin is unpunished and righteousness is unrewarded.” – David Guzik
The four lessons for us, from the above verses, are as follows.
1- “DO NOT LET YOUR HEART ENVY SINNERS”
2- “BUT BE ZEALOUS FOR THE FEAR OF THE LORD ALL THE DAY”
3- “FOR SURELY THERE IS A HEREAFTER”
4- “AND YOUR HOPE WILL NOT BE CUT OFF.”
Let us never ever envy sinners, nor ever desire all the “good life” they may appear to enjoy. Instead, let us be zealous to obey the LORD, all the days of our life. Let us never forget that, life here on the earth, is not an end in itself. There will come a day, when the Righteous LORD will judge everyone who ever lived – Matthew 25:14-46. All who faithfully and obediently follow the LORD God Almighty, will be rewarded. This is certain.
May we always set our eyes, and our hearts, on the LORD, and His ways, and walk faithfully and obediently on it. May we seek the LORD to grant us His grace, and enable us to walk so, all the days of our lives. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The fear of the Lord is a brief description for true religion. It is an inward condition, betokening hearty submission to our heavenly Father. It consists very much in a holy reverence of God, and a sacred awe of him. This is accompanied by a child-like trust in him, which leads to loving obedience, tender submission, and lowly adoration."
