Monday mornings are usually filled with work related thoughts. Since Monday is the first day of the work week, we naturally tend to think more about our work for the day, and also about the week ahead. Work is a good thing, and it is something that is given to us by God, even before the fall of man – Genesis 1:26-28.
When we work well, we will achieve success. Success, which is the fruit of our thinking, planning and execution; yet, it can become a curse to us. Have you heard the expression, “Success got to his head?” Many times man, ends up with a distorted significance of himself, which sadly leads him to a detrimental and damaging frame of mind…ego, pride and arrogance.
The Bible, speaking about man’s worth and value, has some incisive words, that can damage and destroy many a bloated ego. The “New Age” philosophy says, there is nothing that man cannot achieve, if he sets his mind to. In simpler words, “Man is god.” “Self-realisation” and “Self-actualisation” and “Inner Sacred Potential” and “Harnessing Inner Energy” are some of its concepts. Sadly, many Christians seems to adapt such teachings, without realising what they are actually believing in.
“I can do all things…” – Philippians 4:13, is not a success principle for man. It is to tell us that, without Christ the LORD, and His grace working in our lives, we cannot achieve anything in life. Many times don’t quite the full verse which says, “I can do all things THROUGH CHRIST, WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” It is on the same lines of Psalm 127 – “UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE, the builders build in vain.”
Let us look at Psalm 62:9-12 and see what lessons we can learn that would help us be firmly placed to build our lives on the rock solid foundation.
– “9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor. 10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them. 11 God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. 12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.” – Psalm 62:9-12
We can learn four lessons from the above Scripture portion. Today we will look at the first lesson.
1- REALITY OF HUMAN LIFE
– “9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor.”
The Psalmist describes to us the true status of man, without the LORD Jesus Christ, our Creator, and our Redeemer. The quicker we realise this and learn the lessons, the better it is for us, and our progress.
– Surely men of low degree are a vapor
– Men of high degree are a lie
– If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor
Let us learn to have a proper view about man – OURSELVES – and his – OUR – potential. We are “…altogether lighter than vapor” is what the Word of God declares. Such a view of man is not very flattering, isn’t it? It bursts the ego bubble we wish to live in. Unless the LORD comes into our lives; unless we surrender ourselves to Him, and to His will; unless we desire with all our hearts, and willingly do His will obediently and faithfully, it does not amount to much at all, whatever we may have achieved in life.
How is our mental framework wired? This morning, in the light of the Scriptures, it is good to pause and ponder what kind of thoughts, ideas, notions and principles are running our hearts and minds? Let us seek the LORD to build our lives on the foundation that He has laid for His creation. Even so, the LORD help us.
"[The] ...judgment or evaluation, a common biblical metaphor for God's assessment of human actions and character...[is in-line with]...Daniel 5:27, the writing on the wall for King Belshazzar..."you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting," indicating divine judgment...[it]…underscores the collective insignificance of humanity when viewed from an eternal perspective...this points to the need for reliance on God rather than human strength or achievement, as only what is done for God will endure."
