Greed and pride are the two most destructive traits in a human being. All the violence and destruction, that we see, all through the world, is born out of human greed and pride. The Word of God has warned us, already, of the destructive power of such traits.
– “1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” – James 4:1-3
– “There is no calamity greater than lavish desires There is no greater guilt than discontentment. And there is no greater disaster than greed.” – Lao-tzu
Pride is the reason for the downfall of Lucifer. Pride is believing that we are something, while ignoring the glaring fact that, we are not…not even close. The Word of God amply makes it clear about pride, it’s place, and its consequences.
– “5 Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” – Proverbs 16:5
– “Pride is at the bottom of all great mistakes.” – John Ruskin
Love and humility are the perfect antidote for human greed and pride. Where there is love there cannot be greed and covetousness. Where there is humility, there cannot be pride. We see these two traits at work in the LORD Jesus Christ.
Love and humility are traits, that cannot be achieved by human beings, on our own. It is humanly impossible. The reason being, our character is so deeply corrupted by sin, that we cannot truly love, nor can we be genuinely humble. If one finds, any traces of love and humility, in the natural and unregenerated man, it is more a pretence, vanity and self-aggrandisement, than anything else.
– “37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 22:37-40
What about us today? What traits are being pursued? What traits are being cultivated? Is our LORD reflected in our traits? Would our LORD be proud of us? What are we running after? What are our pretences? What masks are we wearing?
"I am persuaded that love and humility are the highest attainments in the school of Christ and the brightest evidences that He is indeed our Master."
