God of the Bible is the epitome and the embodiment of all virtue and goodness. His character is impeccable, and He is the standard against whom, everything else is measured. The Bible teaches us that God is LOVE – the all-encompassing trait. God is also – GOOD, GRACIOUS, GENEROUS, MERCIFUL, KIND, COMPASSIONATE, OMNISCIENT, OMNIPOTENT, OMNIPRESENT, JUST, RIGHTEOUS, TRUTHFUL, FORGIVING and HOLY.
The above traits and virtues are not an exhaustive list of God. This is what is revealed to us in the Bible. God is much more than what is revealed to us in the Bible. What is revealed in the Bible is for us to know and understand who God is, and not know God in His entirety. It is impossible for our finite minds to grasp the infinite God in His entirety.
The LORD God Almighty, the God of the Bible, wants us to think, speak and conduct our lives just like Him. This is precisely what sanctification is all about – we are being transformed into the image of the Son of God, our Redeemer, the LORD Jesus Christ.
– “29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” – Romans 8:29
– “18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18
The LORD urges us through Proverbs 3:3-4, to hold on to something precious and priceless, and forsake it not. In fact the LORD says, “write them upon the table of thine heart.” Let us read the verses and see what it says, and what we can learn from it.
– “3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” – Proverbs 3:3-4
God is urging us to hold on to MERCY and TRUTH, and to never forsake it. Unless these two traits, mercy and truth, are very very important, the LORD would not have had it recorded for us, in the Bible, especially the way it is framed. The emphasis and the insistence of writing them upon our hearts, speaks about the significance of holding on to them. Writing them upon our hearts indicates clearly of internalising these two traits, so that they are assimilated indistinguishably into our character – to become part of who we are.
When we read verse 4, we see why the LORD wants us to possess and hold on to MERCY and TRUTH, apart from these two being godly virtues. The Word of God records for us that, when we hold on to these two godly virtues, we will “…find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” What a blessing it is, isn’t it? We will surely find favour in the sight of God and man; and will also find good understanding – wisdom – to live our lives. A double blessing!!!
However to hold on to MERCY and TRUTH is not a simple and easy thing to do. Herein is the test by fire of our Christian faith, and our very character.
1- MERCY – We as the disciples of the LORD Jesus, are called to be merciful in all our dealings.
– “…mercy is God’s compassionate, undeserved kindness and pity shown to those in need or distress, often involving withholding deserved punishment and offering forgiveness, healing, or relief, reflecting God’s loving nature and covenant faithfulness…” – Google AI
2- TRUTH – We as the disciples of the LORD Jesus, are called to be truthful and transparent in all our dealings.
– “…truth is defined as the absolute, objective reality grounded in the character, mind, and will of God, rather than subjective human perception. It is not merely a collection of facts but is embodied personally in Jesus Christ, who stated, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”.” – Google AI
Now to the critical question dear brothers and sisters. Are we MERCIFUL and TRUTHFUL in our lives? Do others see us as MERCIFUL and TRUTHFUL? Would God find in us, MERCY and TRUTH, in all our thoughts, words and deeds? It is good to be honest in evaluating ourselves. Let us take a few moments to see what is the health condition of our spiritual life, in relation to MERCY and TRUTH in our lives. Even so, the LORD help us.
"Kindness [Mercy] and truth are foundational virtues in a believer's life. They reflect God's character and should be evident in our interactions with others...[they are a sign of our] deep, personal commitment to embodying these virtues...[and] should be integral to our identity. True transformation begins in the heart. By inscribing kindness [mercy] and truth on our hearts, we allow God to shape our character from the inside out."
