Epitaph is a reflection of what has happened between the day we were born, and the day we depart from the earth. We come with a cry into this world. When we depart, people around us, will cry. We don’t bring anything with us, when we are born, except a life, and a promise to live well. We can’t take anything that we have earned, in our life, when we depart. All that we leave behind is how we lived our life…nothing else is remembered about us. Such is the reality of life. The quicker we realise it, the better for us.
Life that live, is itself, very fleeting. It is as though, we are born one day, and the next day we are on our way to leaving this place. Time just flies, and we don’t seem to realise the years that have passed us by. The Written Word of God says, “10 The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labour and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away…12 So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:10, 12
What people think about us, after we depart, which we normally call as the memory of our life, as remembered by others, in their hearts and minds, is what we have truly earned for ourselves. If people don’t remember us fondly and lovingly, then our lives are wasted.
Mind you, all the above is for Christians, and the disciples of the LORD Jesus Christ. Therefore, let us join with the Psalmist, and say – “4 “LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. 5 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor.” – Psalms 39:4-5
May the LORD help us to live wisely, for the glory of God, and for the blessing of His people, and the kingdom of God.
"15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is."
