Life is built on expectations. It progresses on expectations. Expectations are what we dream and deasire for our life. Some of what we expect may be fulfilled, while some others may not be. Some of what we expect may be good, while some others may not be. However, all what we expect will have an impact on us. They shape us in subtle ways into who we are in the present, and into who we become in the future.
The LORD speaking in His Word, in Proverbs 23:17-18, says something about our dreams and desires – the expectations of life, and the end of all what we desire and expect.
– “17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. 18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.” – Proverbs 23:17-18
1- “LET NOT THINE HEART ENVY SINNERS.”
The LORD says it clearly, so that we don’t miss the point – “Let not thine heart envy sinners.” We are exhorted, not only to, not envy sinners, but the advise clearly includes, “DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH SIN AND SINNERS.” This is the gold standard for a proper Christian living. Remember Psalm 1? It should help shape all what we want or desire in our lives.
– “1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.” – Psalm 1:1-2
2- “BUT BE THOU IN THE FEAR OF THE LORD ALL THE DAY LONG”
The LORD not only exhorts us about, what not to do; but He goes on to point us towards, what we should be desiring sincerely, all the days of our lives – “…but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.” We are to live in the “fear” of the LORD, all the day long, and all of our days. Do we remember the “Fear of the LORD” from Proverbs?
– “10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you.” – Proverbs 9:10-11
3- “FOR SURELY THERE IS AN END”
What we desire and expect is secondary, compared to the fact that, there is an end to all things, at a certain, God appointed time – “For surely there is an end.” When that day arrives, God would bring all what we dreamed and desired; all what we spoke and did, into judgment. Having this knowledge should help us WALK wisely, THINK good, SPEAK good, DO good, and EXPECT or desire good, all the days of our lives.
– “35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Matthew 12:35-37
4- “THINE EXPECTATION SHALL NOT BE CUT OFF”
When we walk in the fear of the LORD – “thine expectation shall not be cut off.” The clear thought process here, is this – when we fear the LORD, and temper our dreams, desires and expectations in life, with such a holy fear, then our expectations will match that of what God desires from us, and our expectations will not be cut off. The LORD Himself will take upon the responsibility to fulfill them. This is the blessing that we cannot afford to lose, at any cost. Therefore, we ought to walk faithfully and obediently, on the path, which our LORD had shown to us.
– “31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:31-33
May the LORD help us to wisely desire for things, that will surely and certainly help us to stand before God, as a faithful servant. Let us not run after vain things, that do not help us during our life, and certainly not, on the day we are called to given an account of our lives. Instead, let us dream and desire to run after God, His kingdom, His righteousness, and walk faithfully and obediently on the narrow path. “THE EXPECTATION AND THE END” of all who fear, trust and obey God, will be good and great. Let us never ever forget that. Even so, the LORD help us.
"Obedience to God – to heed His word and to do it wisely – will always bring good...The good that the obedient will find also comes because they have a true and confident trust in God. They can happily and calmly rest in the good God who loves and cares for them."
