The LORD Jesus Christ, speaking to His eager listeners, has some very important words, which I believe, we, as His disciples, should keep reading them, again and again. The words of Jesus, that I wish, our attention to be drawn to, this day, are found in Matthew 7:13-14…
– 13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad and easy to travel is the path that leads the way to destruction and eternal loss, and there are many who enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow and difficult to travel is the path that leads the way to [everlasting] life, and there are few who find it.” – [Amplified Version]
Let us, particularly focus on the words, that our LORD chose to speak, about the “Narrow Way” to help us see things, more clearly, for our lives as Christians, and His disciples.
– SMALL is the gate and NARROW
Narrow literally denotes – pressed, or hemmed in between walls or rocks, like the pathway on a mountain gorge. The gate or the door is insignificant in its appearance, and not as glitzy and glamorous as the other option.
– DIFFICULT to TRAVEL is the PATH that LEADS the WAY to [everlasting] LIFE
Difficulties, troubles, problems, storms and sufferings are to be expected. They are, more a norm, than an exception, on this path. However, this is the only way that will lead to life – a meaningful life; a life that will be fruitful and blessings filled, in the truest sense – not as the world may want to see, but as the LORD sees…and desires. For us, as Christians, this is our encouragement to walk down this unglamorous path.
– There are FEW who FIND it
Since the gate is small, and the path narrow; the unattractive walk, filled with many ups and downs; many would miss it. Some may not even see it. Some others may simply think, this is no way at all. Also, since the path is difficult, not many would like to want it, as one would want, the broad way.
As Christians, we who are called out of darkness, let us remember always, that the life, we are called to, is a life of following our LORD, faithfully, all the days of our lives. A life of self-denial. A life of dying to self, and to all that the world offers, so that we will be fruitful, for our LORD, and become an instrument of blessing, to His people, and to the world at large.
– “9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. 11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honourable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.” – 1 Peter 2:9-12
Even so the LORD help us to walk faithfully and obediently on this narrow way.
"The narrow gate opens into the narrow way, and this leads to LIFE. The narrow gate and the narrow way are one. I mean by this that entering the narrow gate means making a start in the direction of a good life, and walking in the narrow way is progress in a good life. But where is the gate, and where is the way? I answer. . . . this gate is our Lord Jesus Christ as set forth in his Word..."
