Today is Good Friday – the day, our LORD Jesus Christ was crucified to the cross in Calvary. The Word of God says, “21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21. The sinless Lamb of God was offered as a sacrifice on our behalf, so that our redemption could be bought, and our freedom paid for, by the blemish-less blood of the LORD Jesus Christ. HalleluYah!!!
The hymn, “THE OLD RUGGED CROSS” is one among the many, that the LORD uses as a beacon of light, to illuminate the way of the cross, and to enlighten the Christian, about the life of a Christian.
It is important for us, as Christians to come to a certain state of realisation, where we see the cross, the Christ, and ourselves, in the proper light. C. J. Mahaney has some honest words for us to think about – “Unless you see yourself standing there with the shrieking crowd, full of hostility and hatred for the holy and innocent Lamb of God, you don’t really understand the nature and depth of your sin or the necessity of the cross.” How true!
The refrain of the hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross” gives us the sum and substance of what a Christian should be aspiring for, in our lives…
“So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.”
Do we cherish the old rugged cross more than everything else, in our lives? Is the LORD, who chose to die for our sins, given the prime position in our lives? Have we laid our cherished trophies at the feet of our Saviour? Or, are we trying to add many more trophies to our, already big list of trophies? Are we willing to cling to the cross, and cross alone? What is it that we so dearly are wanting in life? Is it Christ our Redeemer, and a life, carrying His cross? If it is not, then we ought to wonder whom are we following.
"God is looking for broken men who have judged themselves in the light of the cross of Christ. When He wants anything done, He takes up men who have come to the end of themselves, whose confidence is not in themselves, but in God."
