Life in general, whoever we are, is governed by a set of values, principles and ethics. Most of the cultures, all over the world, have good intentions at its core. The LORD God Almighty, our Creator and Redeemer, has laid down His standards, for the life and the living of His children.
The LORD who asks us, as His children to follow a certain way of living, is Himself the embodiment of all that He is asking of us. This is the distinction between the God of the Bible, and the others, who lay claim to that position. If God Himself is an embodiment of all that is asked of us, then it is imperative upon us, to follow them with all our heart and mind.
Proverbs 6:16-19 lays down a small list of things that the LORD hates or abhors…utterly detests…an abomination to Him – “16 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.”
If we observe, the list is about daily life – that which is closely related to us, our life, lifestyle and our values – “17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.”
Secondly, as the Enduring Word Commentary puts it – “This collection of seven sins is also focused on how we treat others. We must honour God and worship Him in spirit and in truth, yet God is also concerned about how we treat others. Each of these are serious sins against others.”
The list mentioned above is a double edge sword. It cuts us on both sides. May the LORD help us to live a life pleasing to Him, and glorifying His name. Even so the LORD help us.
"A person’s highest ethical duty is to love God with all of their heart, mind, soul, and strength. Their second highest ethical duty is to love their neighbour as themselves. For a Christian, fulfilling these moral obligations takes place in obedience to the Law of Christ and submission to the teachings of God’s Word. The ultimate goal is to glorify God in everything that is said, done, thought, and felt."
