Each of us have a story which is unique to us. The story that we have may be similar in some parts with others in this world; but for most part it would be uniquely ours, just like our fingerprints and retina. Have we ever asked ourselves, “What is my story?” Yes dear brothers and sisters, what is our personal story? Do we know it?
I want us to meditate this morning upon the beautiful English hymn, “Blessed Assurance” by Fanny J. Crosby, which she wrote in 1873. Most of our stories would fit into the theme of this hymn, with space for our uniquely personal experiences. The first line of the refrain – *THIS IS MY STORY, THIS IS MY SONG* – sums it all up for us.
– “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Saviour all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Saviour all the day long.”
It is evident from the refrain that the theme is praise filled gratefulness. Why is Fanny J. Crosby so insistent on praising, thanking and glorifying God? What are the compelling reasons for her to say, “This is my story, this is my song” – in the refrain? The whole hymn gives us the reasons for her story. They are our reasons too. Let us look at just the first stanza here this morning.
BLESSED ASSURANCE, JESUS IS MINE!
– “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.”
The talk about this blessed assurance, a foretaste of the divine glory, and we becoming the heir of salvation, was made possible only by the virtue of the LORD Jesus purchasing us and our redemption by His sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary, so that we are born anew of His Spirit. The washing of our sins by His blood shed on the Cross of Calvary – speaks of the glorious work of salvation that the LORD Jesus undertook and accomplished. Is this your story too? It certainly is mine.
If this is what the LORD Jesus had done for us and our redemption, then what better thing does one have, other than, to praise God and worship Him all the days of our lives? This should be the overarching theme of our life story – “praising my Saviour all the day long.”
– “1 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” – Psalm 34:1-3
The continued PRAISE filled GRATITUDE towards God should form the FOUNDATION of every Christian’s life story. PRAISING, THANKING and GLORIFYING the LORD Jesus should be the pillars and the beams on which, our whole life structure should stand. Even so, the LORD help us.
"David's declaration to bless the Lord at all times challenges us to maintain an attitude of praise regardless of our circumstances. This commitment is a conscious decision to focus on God's goodness and sovereignty...Making praise a continual practice transforms our perspective and aligns our hearts with God's will. It becomes a lifestyle rather than a mere reaction to favourable situations."
