Prayer and praying is one of the most natural thing that comes to a Christian. It is equally true that we will have many unanswered prayers. How we proceed further, when we encounter an unanswered prayer, is very critical thing for our spiritual growth and maturity.
The character of God is clearly revealed in His answer to all our prayers. Whatever His answer is – YES, NO or WAIT – God has only the very best of our welfare, in His heart. We may or may not see it, right then. We may or may not understand, what God is doing, in and through us. It doesn’t matter. As long as we hold on to the LORD’s hem, just like the lady with issue of blood [Luke 8:43-48] and walk in faith, everything will fall into its place, in its time, and in the way it should, for our good and our blessing. Trust God and move forward, obediently and faithfully…He will always do only the very best for His children – “11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” – Matthew 7:11
A few insightful perspectives on prayer, from two Christian disciples, who have walked before us. This should help us to see prayer in its proper light.
John Calvin says…
– “We must not think that [God] takes no notice of us, when He does not answer our wishes: for He has a right to distinguish what we actually need.”
God knows what is good, and what is right for us. Therefore, we should learn to pray, and then wait upon God…He will decide what is good, and will answer our prayer in His time.
Oswald Chambers says…
– “Never make the blunder of trying to forecast the way God is going to answer our prayer.”
Prayer is to ask or request our God, not demand our right, nor command God, to do things for us, just because He said, “Ask and it shall be given unto you” – Matthew 7:7-8.
May the LORD grant us, the grace the wisdom, and the discernment, to trust Him, more than we trust, our own understanding of things. He knows it better, on any given subject, and on any given day. May the LORD help us to walk in faith.
"God can answer prayer, though He bestow not the very thing for which we pray. He can sometimes better answer the lawful desires and good end we have in prayer another way. If our end be our own good and happiness, God can perhaps better answer that end in bestowing something else than in the bestowment of the very thing which we ask. And if the main good we aim at in our prayers be attained, our prayer in answered."
